Port Orange Traffic Citation and Highway Danger

About 58,700 residents live in the city of Port Orange, which is found in Volusia County, Florida. It's a part of a larger metro area including Daytona Beach, with a population of about 600,000 residents. Due to the close proximity to Daytona Beach, the area hosts a number of visitors every year.

Daytona Beach provides one of the most popular destinations for events including NASCAR races, bike weeks and many more. People come from all over the country to the area and Port Orange does become crowded during certain times of the year.

After receiving a traffic ticket in Port Orange, you may be rather unhappy. Consider these statistics for the area traffic:

  • Adding in millions of visitors every year makes the roads crowded with drivers unfamiliar with the area.
  • A large portion of visitors traveling to the Port Orange area use Interstate 95, which runs directly through the city.
  • The Florida section of I-95 is used by more than 186,000 drivers daily.
  • I-95, in Florida, is known as the most deadly highway in the country based on fatalities.
  • About 6,500 accidents happen every year in Volusia County with about 125 fatalities caused by these accidents.
  • Traffic accident stats in both Volusia County and Port Orange are on the rise.

These numbers would be far worse in the authorities didn't monitor the traffic in the area.

Volusia County Traffic Infraction Stats for 2015

Throughout 2015, law enforcement issued 37,495 tickets in Volusia County. This doesn't include written or verbal warnings given to drivers disobeying traffic laws. About 13,300 of the tickets were for speeding with another 4,445 for careless driving. Both of these offenses are very dangerous.

Judges in the area only dismissed about 13% of the total tickets issued. If you think you're going to get out of your traffic ticket, your chances are very slim.

Avoid a License Suspension in Port Orange, Florida

The State of Florida considers driving a privilege and they will revoke that privilege if they see fit. Usually, this happens when you get too many traffic tickets in a short amount of time. Each ticket comes with points and if you get 12 points in one year, the state will suspend your license for 30 days. It gets even worse if you get more points than just 12.

Points for traffic tickets include:

  • Fleeing the scene of a vehicle crash - 6 points
  • Causing a traffic accident while speeding - 6 points
  • Ignoring a traffic signal or sign - 4 points
  • Passing a school bus while it's stopped - 4 points
  • Speeding at 15 mph or more over the posted limit - 4 points
  • Driving after curfew - 3 points
  • Speeding at less than 15 mph over the posted limit - 3 points
  • Other traffic infractions - 3 or 4 points

It's easy to see how you can accumulate points rather quickly; especially considering you can get more than one ticket during the same stop.

Erase Points with Traffic School Online

Online traffic school offers the basic driver improvement course to Port Orange residents. This course allows you to avoid the points from a recent traffic ticket. You will need to pay the ticket and inform the clerk of the court you will be enrolling in online traffic school.

That's all you need to do to avoid points on your license, which will help you keep your license from being suspended.
